How to Make Dental Hygiene Fun for Our Kids
Even as an adult, brushing, flossing and dental check-ups can feel somewhat like a chore and if it does for us then our kids most certainly feel this way as well. The best way to change this is to make your child, and more importantly yourself, excited about good oral care.
Videos and Songs
The internet is such a useful tool nowadays and there is so much content out there, especially for kids and dental hygiene. Check out YouTube or other video sites for fun and educational tips about dental hygiene. This can help them to associate brushing their teeth to fun.
Learn one of the songs from their favorite video or better yet, make one up for you both to sing during brushing.
Brush and Floss Together
One way to make this a more positive and fun experience for your child is to brush and floss together. As we know, kids learn from example. So, use this as an opportunity to teach your kids great brushing and flossing techniques.
Special Toothpaste and Toothbrush
Having a special toothpaste and toothbrush for your child will make brushing more fun for them. Try buying a toothbrush with bright colors or their favorite TV character. And for toothpaste, try one with fruity flavors.
Dental Visit Rewards
As a kid, I hated going to the doctor to get shots. In fact, I dreaded it. My parents decided to reward me with going to the ice-cream shop after having to get a shot. The same concept can be used here with dental visits however, maybe a healthier, non-sugary treat. Such as, a trip to the park, their favorite snack or maybe even something from the toy store.
